Economics Café, MOE-registered leading economics tuition centre in Singapore that provides Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Economics tuition includes in its program the enhancement of a student’s skills in essay writing.

Mr. Edmund Quek is the person who facilitates the learning process in the tuition centre. He is a highly experienced and well sought after economics tutor in Singapore. Apart from teaching his students the economic theories and concepts, Mr. Edmund Quek also imparts to them skills in essay writing. Although these skills are also taught in some schools, they are often not emphasised due to the large amount of time that the teachers need to cover the large amount of course content.

As an economics tutor, it is his goal is to impart two things to the students and that to know the skills and knowledge on ‘what to write’ and ‘how to write it’.

Mr. Edmund Quek is with close to two decades of teaching experience and likewise holds a Master’s Degree in Economics (MSSc) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) which makes him stand out among some of the most highly qualified economics tutors in Singapore. Basing on his experience in providing economics tuition, he discovered that the aspect of ‘what to write’ is relatively easier to tackle as this can be done by first explaining economic concepts to students and then applying them in essay discussions. Although this process can be arduous for some, most will ‘get the hang of it’ after sufficient practice.

According to Mr Quek, teaching students ‘what to write’ is like teaching students in a swimming class the strokes of swimming and then practising them in the pool. In his trainings for essay writing skills, Mr Quek would like to emphasise that the final stage of this process is practising the strokes in the pool or applying economic concepts in essay discussions, and not learning the strokes of swimming from a manual or learning economic concepts from economics lecture notes.

Accordingly, the aspect of ‘how to write it’ is a more difficult and challenging one to tackle. Mr Quek’s quest for the ‘best’ way to impart this skill has led him back to the traditional and possibly the simplest method, and that is to show students model answers.

Although there is perfect answer to an essay question, particularly so in view of the examination time constraint, an answer which covers most of the important aspects of an essay question with good elaboration should earn students close to full marks. Mr Quek have written many economics model essays and is still writing economics model essays. These models are written with the objective of showing students what economic concepts to apply in answering various theoretical and topical questions, or simply is the discovering of ‘what to write’. In addition, they also show students how to explain economic concepts in responding to various questions or what is learned in ‘how to write it’.

Mr. Edmund Quek helps over 75 per cent of the students in his economics tuition classes obtain a distinction in the ‘A’ level economics examination nearly every year. In some years, the distinction rate hit as high as 90 per cent, with the remaining students mostly scoring a B. Over his one and a half decade-long teaching career, he has taught more than 2600 students on a tuition basis.

The passion and aspiration to contribute to the society by making the learning of economics easy and interesting is what pushed Mr. Edmund Quek to craft a unique learning methodology for this specific field of learning. He likewise wants to raise the bar of students of Singapore in terms of learning Economics, which is why apart from doing well in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Economics examination, Mr. Edmund Quek also teaches students in his economics tuition classes how to apply the concepts they learn in economics to increase their wealth in the future. Students who wish to take economics tuition with Mr. Edmund Quek will now have an idea of what to expect when they join his economics tuition class.
