Geog Cafe is a Geography Tuition Centre in Singapore which specializes in Secondary, Junior College and IB and IGCSE Geography. The centre is aimed at bringing out the best from the students, helping them ace their examinations in the subject Geography and obtain outstanding scoring distinction. Leading the students to the path of excellence in this scheme of learning is the spirited Mr Eric Goh, who was an ex JJ and Hwa Chong Lecturer which makes him highly commendable to teach Geography for JC students.
Ten years back in 2005, more than half his batch of students in a neighborhood college scored distinction for his subject as a result his college was subsequently awarded value-add for Geography by the Ministry. And this is what instituted his fervor for helping other students in discovering and living their interest in Geography. He has since helped a few hundred Geography tuition students, resulting in distinction from almost all the colleges in Singapore.
In view of his qualifications to teach Geography for Secondary, Mr Eric Goh has taught in Fairfield Methodist Secondary school where he has experienced teaching both Normal and Express stream students. He focused mainly in Geography but has since taught social studies as well since he is NIE trained in that subject, as that is integral to his students scoring well for elective Geography. He developed essential techniques in teaching the subject more effectively and applied all the three themes for Secondary students which cover: Our Dynamic Planet, Our Changing World and Geographical Skills and Investigations.
While for his aptitude to teach for IB and IGCSE students, in point of fact Mr Eric Goh was the only Geography teacher in HCIS being tasked to teach both the final year IGCSE and IB students in 2011. Thus, all the lessons were strictly conducted by me, resulting in 48 percent of students scoring distinctions, shaving nearly 1 point – an average improvement of 1 grade per Geography student from previous cohort, off the mean subject grade.
With more than eight years of teaching experience in a college, Mr Eric Goh was able to craft his own outline of techniques and secrets to scoring well in Geography exams – as such he described as simple.
He believes that while the examination board may vary the Geography questions, the tested concepts must come from the core Geography syllabus and the basis of a good grade falls on two areas. First is to build a strong knowledge of Geography theories and second is to build application skills from past questions.
The Geography classes under his administration are nothing like other school lectures. Most of his classes revolve around question discussion and problem solving. They are interactive and filled with tons of knowledge and light-hearted examples to help your understanding.
