Osteoporosis is an illness occurs among older people and people who don’t eat enough of certain substances causing bones to become less strong and less dense that will substantially lead to fracture damage. As people get older, their bone formation will exceeds bone desorption and at the age of 35, the system would reverse and some bone material would start to loss. Nevertheless, osteoporosis is an illness where it involves a higher amount of bone loss while the milder amount of bone loss is called osteopenia.

Although osteoporosis is more common in older women who had passed the stage of menopause due to the fall of oestrogen levels, it also affects older men at the age of 60 and above. However the chance of osteoporosis to develop can also happen among smoker, drinker, people who had a history of bone fracture or genetics code, people who lack in calcium, people with sedentary lifestyle and people with medical conditions, among other things.

In general, osteoporosis symptoms and problems can be indicated by fragility fractures which happen due to the minor injury such as a simple fall to the ground. Another signs that lead to osteoporosis include fracture on vertebrae where it leads to persistent back pain, loss of height, and a stooping or bent forward posture. These problems may cause osteoporosis patients unable to live independently or doing usual daily activities afterwards with difficulty of breathing.

People should take precautions in avoiding osteoporosis problems but if it is not possible, they are recommended to seek help from health care providers. Osteoporosis can be confirmed with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan (DEXA scan) to check the density in a human body. There is also a new way of screening test for osteoporosis namely digital X-ray radiogrammety (DXR) which is easier to perform as it requires less technical equipment but it tend to be less accurate than DEXA scan.

There are several things that can be done to prevent osteoporosis or to slow down the affects of the bone loss. Exercise is one of the many ways to prevent osteoporosis as it helps to strengthen the bones and stimulate bone-making cells and it is advisable to exercise regularly. Food and diet comprising calcium and vitamin D is important to people for their bone health and they should take an adequate supplies of both foods.

Treatment for osteoporosis is related with a person’s age, bone density measurements and other risk factors or indicators including both fragile bones and bone fractures. If there is osteoporosis found in a person, various drugs would be suggested to the patients such as bisphosphonates, denosumab, and teriparatide. Some other factors are also important for human well being, this include their lifestyle as well as precautions.
